Field Notes

Description:

Caiman closely resemble Alligators except for the bony scales on their belly. The largest is the Black Caiman of the Orinoco and Amazon Rivers which may exceed 15 feet and the smallest are the Cuvier’s Dwarf Caiman which only reach 5 feet.

Habitat:

Syon Park's Tropical Zoo (the zoo cares for abandoned or illegally obtained animals). However, this extremely adaptable species can live in virtually all natural open habitats such as savannas, swamps, large rivers and lakes and readily invades open habitats created by humans such as cattle ponds, dams and roadside burrow pits. Caiman are found in the American Tropics.
