Field Notes

Description:

Chipping Sparrow. I have not seen this chipping sparrow before with such a white belly. There was a flock of them flying and hopping around the cow pasture and along the fence line and posting themselves on the fence wires.

Habitat:

Cow Pasture at Kinder Farm Park, Millersville, Maryland

Thank you StirredMocha for helping to identify this chipping sparrow. I've seen lots of chipping sparrow but these sparrows had such white bellies and that caused me to misidentify it. Thanks so much.
Nice shots! However, I believe your pictures show Chipping Sparrows (Spizella passerina) rather than juvenile White-crowned Sparrows. The eyeline in WC does not extend pass the eye to the bill and that area in that species is usually either clear or patchy rather than a distinct line. Additionally, WC sparrow juveniles would have a buffy underside in the second half while your birds show clear white bellies. The third picture also shows stronger submoustachial stripes in the bird facing you than expected in WC sparrow. http://www.allaboutbirds.org/guide/chipping_sparrow/id
