Field Notes

Description:

I had to do two postings of this bird because he was such a willing model. Beautiful red chest and fairly large bird. I tried to keep the deer out of the pictures as much as possible because it was in a state of deterioration and caked with mud and not a pleasant part of the picture, but I have to keep it real here. I had a hard time trying to figure which picture to use as the lead. He/she was a great model - not intimidated by me at all. These birds usually go after live prey. Not sure why this guy decided to dine on carrion. He/she looked healthy enough.

Wonderful spotting and series of photos
Thanks Williefromwi! I am always on the look out for any opportunity to take pictures and this is one I couldn't keep driving by without stopping.
Fantastic series, I am thrilled you were able to photograph and post it for all of us to see.
Thank you both! @east end & MarketaRysova
Great photos, very interesting background blur. Beautiful bird.
Thanks for the heads up Apple with that mission! I added him and his other spotting as well as the vultures that came back after he flew off that day. And Thanks Goody for the kind words.
Beautiful spot! Definitely a candidate for the Hunters mission at: http://www.projectnoah.org/missions/8463465 And the
While not the subject of the spotting, I think the carcass plays a large role in it. Life happens and scavengers are there to help clean up. Great series!
I know the feeling Elsa. I don't get to see them often around here. That's why I stopped on the side of a 65 mph road and jumped out of my truck to see if I could get close enough for him to let me take his picture. Well okay his picture A LOT of times. :0)
Fantastic! I really love raptors, wish I saw them more often here around my tracks.
Thanks ya'll! I tried to show him from all angles here.
