Field Notes
Description:
The white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus), also known as the Virginia deer or simply as the whitetail, is a medium-sized deer native to the United States (all but five of the states), Canada, Mexico, Central America, and South America as far south as Peru. It has also been introduced to New Zealand and some countries in Europe, such as Finland, Czech Republic, and Serbia. In the Americas, it is the most widely distributed wild ungulate.
I have noticed quite a size difference from the white tails we get here and those my parents get on their property in NC. The NC does are as big as, and some even bigger, than our full grown bucks.
Habitat:
Woods and forests.

Notes:
These are wild deer that frequent my property each morning and evening. The first photo is of a button buck I nicknamed Spike with his mom (Scarlet). I can tell scarlet from all the other does as she has a nasty scar on her hind leg, and she will remain outside when I come out so long as I don't try to approach her.
