Field Notes

Habitat:

This Decorative Silver Orb Spider was spotted in the rice field behind our house.

Notes:

Leucauge decorata (Walckenaer, 1841) Decorative Silver Orb Spider. This spider's web was moored on the stems of rice plants, on both sides of the turf dyke which runs up the middle of the field. On one side, the moorings were at the top of the rice stems and at the other side of the dyke, the moorings were much lower, the result being that the web was tilted at an angle. That made me think of the genus Leucauge, but I had only ever seen "pear shaped" Leucauge spiders and this one looked more like a Stretch Spider.. However, after wasting a lot of time, looking in all the wrong places, I tried Google lens which led me to Arachne.org.au and there it was, the Decorative Silver Orb Spider. Maybe this Artificial Intelligence will be useful after all. :-)
