Field Notes

Description:

A pelican, derived from the Greek word πελεκυς pelekys (meaning “axe” and applied to birds that cut wood with their bills or beaks) is a large water bird with a large throat pouch, belonging to the bird family Pelecanidae.

Habitat:

Modern pelicans, of which there are eight species, are found on all continents except Antarctica. They primarily inhabit warm regions, though breeding ranges reach 45° south (Australian Pelican, P. conspicillatus) and 60° North (American White Pelicans, P. erythrorhynchos, in western Canada).[1] Birds of inland and coastal waters, they are absent from polar regions, the deep ocean, oceanic islands, and inland South America.

Notes:

For a big bird, they are so graceful I think. they look so wise. See them all the time around the Maroochydore river. I have lots of photos of them. I have a good one where he/she is walking along the beach, when I find it again, i will post for you to see! there is lots of information on the Wiki site if you want to have a read. By the way I am not sure which 'species' of pelican these pics represent.
