Field Notes

Description:

Nyctemera is a genus of moths in the family Arctiidae.

Their forewings are dark brown with white patterned band across. Their abdomens have black and yellow rings, the typical Tiger Moths warning colour pattern.

The Magpie Moth is active by day and night. It can be seen across a large part of Australia.

Habitat:

coastal wildlife corridor

Notes:

Not sure of the scientific name of this moth. I found reference to Nyctemera baulus tertiana and Nyctemera secundiana that both look similar to me.

thanks Dominique. You can't imagine how long I chased this moth! It kept landing in the grass. Eventually it flew onto this grass stem and rested there for a few seconds. Luckily I was ready!!
