Unfortunately I couldn't spot a male anywhere. In picture number two she is accompanied by a male Tufted Duck (Aythya fuligula).

I understand. Nevertheless, it is a beautiful pic.
@Emma: don't forget the size, it's almost half the size of the common merganser.
The female looks very similar to a common merganser except for the difference in hair color and beak.
