Field Notes

Description:

The Sulawesi forest turtle is one of the world’s most enigmatic and poorly known turtles; there are few observations from the wild and its life history remains virtually unstudied. The species is a moderate-sized (carapace length to 278 mm), semi-aquatic omnivorous turtle, that lays one or occasionally two large eggs in each clutch.

Habitat:

Found only in the forests and streams of Sulawesi, Indonesia.

Notes:

This rare turtle from the forests of Sulawesi was only scientifically discovered in 1995. IUCN lists its conservation status as critically endangered.

This specimen is a female and was spotted at Tulsa Zoo & Living Museum.

Comments (1)

This spotting has been updated with a photo of a male. He was introduced into the exhibit about 1 minute before this image (#3). He obviously knows what to do. ;-) (p.s. - Sorry for the poor quality. All 3 photos were taken with my phone camera.)
