Field Notes

Description:

A "jam session" with a band of tiny ants called "sugar ants" here (not to be confused with the other larger ant species with the same common name). The spot of jam was approximately 18 mm in length.

Habitat:

House pests in the equatorial tropics of northern New Guinea.

Notes:

One of the 3 or 4 species of ants that invade our house and give us not a minute's respite if food is left briefly on the table, counter, etc.

Thanks Alice. Living in the tropics one must accept house squatters from the animal kingdom, I'm afraid. But I guess it is a small tradeoff :-)

I am bringing my ant eater there.

Not sure it would work with your ants, but there have been some sucessful when they put a potted plant near the ants. They move their young into it and you remove the plant from the house.
