I thought I had remembered this from the Insect Museum at the University of Costa Rica, San Pedro--just couldn't recall the name.
I think it is Tropidacris cristata, Giant Grasshopper. I saw some additional names like Giant Red Wing Grasshopper, but I think it is not Red-winged Grasshopper. That one would be an Arphia sp. from US. http://fireflyforest.net/firefly/2008/09/27/red-winged-grasshopper
