Field Notes

Description:

Small shrubs, not exceeding 50 cm in height - producing thick and upright woody shoots covered with soft elongated leaves. The fruit is a bright red berry, containing one seed, and it grows rather low on a shoot, from a thicker and leafless part of branch.

Habitat:

Montane pastures, above treeline, at some 1600m of altitude; on edges of private and fenced pastures in Jura Natural reserve. Many of these shrubs had their branches seemingly eaten (goats, chamois ??) - but that was difficult to ascertain.

Notes:

Very toxic, all parts of it, in particular the berry - attractive to birds, they often indulge on them, but are immune on toxins. It's said that a dose of 10 or more berries can be lethal for humans.

Many thanks to Mauron for the help in IDing this shrub.
