Field Notes

Description:

Large brown woodpeckers with black-scalloped plumage. The are typically seen on the ground digging with their slightly curved bill looking for ants and beetles - their primary diet. The underside of the wings and tail feathers are bright yellow on the eastern birds and red on the western birds.

Habitat:

Woodlands, edges, parks and yards.
