Description:

A large beech tree rises high in the virgin beech forests of the Shirakami Sanchi, a world natural heritage site located in Northern Japan.

Habitat:

Native to Japan and a dominant species in Japanese deciduous forests. Found from the Oshima Peninsula in Hokkaido in the north to the Osumi Peninsula in Kyushu. It grows from approximately sea level to an altitude of 1400 meters.
