Field Notes

Description:

A nest made of leaves, about 10-15cm long.

Notes:

This was about 2m off the ground and there were a few other similar nests on nearby branches. I have no idea what made them... an insect or spider, perhaps?

Hi Leuba - sorry, I didn't think to take a shot of the tree itself. It was only small (about 2m tall) so if it was a kurrajong it would have been a very young one I think. But I know even less about flora than I do about fauna, so I have no idea really! I've posted a second shot that shows some of the leaves on the tree.
Were these on a Kurrajong tree ? If the tree was a Kurrajong ( Brachychiton populneum), the nests could be those of a Kurrajong bag moth - family Crambidae. They roll fresh leaves together as a bag and live inside. This nest looks really dry and obviously broken off the twig- could be an old one ?? . I'd be interested to know what tree it was. Interesting..
