Description:
A common woodpecker found in central Texas and into eastern Mexico to northern Nicaragua. Barred black and white with a pale tan breast. Males have a yellow spot in front of the eyes, a red crown, and a yellow-orange nape.
Habitat:
Spotted foraging on a rotten tree at the National Butterfly Center in Mission, Texas.
Notes:
This species is omnivorous and eats a wide variety of food including insects, flying insects, seeds, berries, fruit, and acorns.
