Description:

Small female, black spider with blue chelicera and red patterned abdomen. "Adults tend to be about a centimeter in length. Both sexes have a bright red abdomen; the female has in addition a black central stripe." - Wikipedia The male can be seen at: http://www.projectnoah.org/spottings/10575698

Habitat:

Spike moss in dirt along trail at Lake Poway. "It occurs from sea level to tree line, occupying relatively dry habitats such as coastal dunes or oak woodlands." - Wikipedia

Notes:

I was looking at the moss and I noticed this tiny spider. My first P. johnsoni :) Aka Red-backed Jumping Spider. "When threatened, the redbacked jumping spider can inflict a quite painful bite in self defense, but with no serious medical consequences. This species constructs conspicuous tubular silken nests under rocks and wood on the ground. " - Wikipedia
