Field Notes

Description:

The fascinating little spider carrying her eggs in her mouth on 24 June 2016 (http://www.projectnoah.org/spottings/191976101/fullscreen) remained in her web holding her eggs for 9 more days. Her eggs hatched on 2 July 2016. There were approximately 40 spiderlings, all very pale with transparent legs. The mother remained in the web below her babies (see 5th picture) guarding them until they left the web on the 19th of July. She also disappeared when they were gone. I was surprised how long they stayed in the web (about 16 days). You can see the empty egg mass in the 4th picture, upper center.

Habitat:

A corner of a garden wall, semi-rural area, San Cristobal de Las Casas, Chiapas, Mexico.
