Field Notes

Description:

3" long blue colored salamander found under a rock close to a lake.

Habitat:

Long Hunter State Park, Tennessee.

Notes:

Similar in appearance but larger & more strongly blue colored than the other salamanders we found today http://www.projectnoah.org/spottings/9031036

Thanks again Lisa, I appreciate your help - I've never 'met' a salamander before a couple of weeks ago so they are very new to me! Hopefully we will find some of the more colorful ones on our travels!

Ambystomatids have fatter bodies, much larger heads and the legs are chunkier.

Check out the Ambystoma family of salamanders (more commonly known as mole salamanders).. It looks to me like either a blue-spotted or a jeffersonianum.. GREAT photo :)
