Scarus vetula
18.3272, -65.3328
Field Notes
Description:
The initial stage of the Queen Parrotfish can be distinguished by its brown coloring and the white bar of coloring that extends from below its head to its tail. Queen Parrotfish in this younger stage do not often grow to more than a foot.
Habitat:
Primarily inhabit Caribbean coral reefs. Can be seen swimming by themselves, or sometimes in aggregations with other Parrotfish.
Notes:
Parrotfish feeding habits are responsible for the 'crackling' sound that can be heard while swimming on reefs--the sound of their hard beaks cracking against coral.
