Description:
Northwestern gartersnakes have the most variable scalation of any gartersnake in the Northwest. They usually have 7 upper labial scales per side (rarely 6 or 8), 8 lower labial scales (frequently 9, rarely 7 or 10), 17 mid-dorsal scale rows (rarely 15 or 19), 136-162 ventral scales, and 49-72 subcaudal scales. With respect to color pattern, Northwestern gartersnakes are considered to be the most variable snake in Washington or Oregon. (from "Reptiles of Washington and Oregon")
