Comma Butterfly

Polygonia cf. oreas

Yes, could also be Polygonia gracilis zephyrus, which is probably also more common than P. oreas. But with only this picture of an old butterfly I think we better take Polygonia sp. as scientific ID with adding both possible candidates in the description side, so we are on the safer side with the ID. I wasn't that sure about P. oreas, that's why I put a "cf.".
Welcome to Project Noah 4G Clan We hope you like the site as much we do; there are many features you can explore: We invite you to go to http://www.projectnoah.org/faq where you will find the purpose and “rules” of Project Noah. There is a blog http://blog.projectnoah.org/ where we post articles from spotters with special insight into different organisms. There are also the chats for help with identification, and to comment on your own and others’ spottings. Look at the global and local missions to put your spottings into: http://www.projectnoah.org/missions
Polygonia gracilis zephyrus is another possibility, would you agree?
Nymphalidae, Nymphalinae, Nymphalini, Polygonia sp. and might be Polygonia cf. oreas. Yours is at the end of its lifetime, so pretty worn and the markings are no more clearly visible. http://bugguide.net/node/view/111063/bgimage http://www.butterfliesofamerica.com/L/polygonia_o_oreas_specimens2.htm http://www.butterfliesofamerica.com/images/Nymphalidae/Nymphalinae/Polygonia_o_oreas/25_Polygonia_o_oreas_M_nr_Carmel_Monterey_Co_CA_USA_02-VII-67_1.jpg http://www.butterfliesofamerica.com/L/polygonia_o_oreas_specimens1.htm My ID is mostly based on the markings of the hindwing. Do you have another picture of it? What do other people think of it??
