Field Notes

Description:

A long-winged, long-tailed hawk of open grassland and marshes, the Northern Harrier forages by flying slowly low above the ground looking for small rodents. It is one of the few raptors in which the sexes look quite different: the male is white below with a light gray back and hood, the female is mottled in browns.

Wing spans are around 38 - 48 inches. They nest on the ground, not in trees. Their faces are somwhat rounded like owls and have a great sense of hearing assisting in their hunt.

Haha yes Greg - my husband says I spend far too much time here!
Thanks...They're my hobby and my passion. The photography is getting better! ;-)
Thanks again http://www.projectnoah.org/users/KarenL , I think I will have to retire inorder to be the fanatic you are on here. You inspire so many of us with your kindness. I'd like to catch some closeups of one of these on the ground or pirtched, easier to focus for rookies like me LOL.
http://www.projectnoah.org/users/ChristyHolland Thanks for your comment, you have some nice raptors on you page too.
http://www.projectnoah.org/users/Goody Thanks for the encouragement. New to photography. You are quite the photo meister however. What camera and lenses do you use all the way over there?
It kind of reminds me of an owl in the face, and yes the tail and wing feathers are very long!
This is a common hawk near my home (open prairies aplenty here!), and I love to watch them glide over the fields in search of prey. Great images!
Thanks AlikaKay. These have long wings and tails indeed, and their faces are unique. Will be checking out your galleries as well.
Beautiful shots of the hawk! Love the first photo.
