Field Notes

Description:

Catalpa Tree. Also called Indian Bean Tree and Cigar Tree. There are two species in North America. Southern Catalpa (Catalpa bignonioides) and Catalpa Speciosa (northern catalpa). The northern species has slightly larger leaves, flowers, and bean pods. This tree is the sole source of food for the catalpa sphinx moth (Ceratomia catalpae) who eats the leaves. It is a fast growing tree with an extensive root system, growing 39-59 feet tall and 20-39 feet wide. They have large heart-shaped leaves and have showy white or yellow flowers. During the autumn they produce a slender bean pod that contains numerous small flat seeds. Catalpas provide great shade and are a popular habitat for many birds, providing them good shelter from rain and wind.

Habitat:

There were two of these very large trees with lots of bean pods on them growing wild in the field at Kinder Farm Park in Millersville, Maryland.
