Delphacid Plant Hopper
16.7354, -92.6387
Field Notes
Description:
Tiny strange Hopper (with long antennae?), about 4 mm long. Family Delphacidae. Many species are important pests of cereals and corn and transmit viruses.
Habitat:
Heavy shrubbery along a street, semi-urban area, outskirts of San Cristobal de Las Casas, 2,200 meters.
Notes:
This brief summary states that this family is unique in possessing a movable spur on the hind tibiae (wish I had gotten a lateral view to see that better, it can be seen faintly in these pictures) and that both sexes transmit vibrations to attract the opposite sex. It says that if we were as sensitive to vibrations as these tiny hoppers, we would be able to sense vibrations 1 km away in any direction! http://www.inbio.ac.cr/papers/insectoscr/Texto102.html
