Field Notes

Description:

Green-grey moss growing from the ground which looks somewhat like the moss growing from the trees, but tougher and sturdier

Habitat:

edge of trail area on the dunes in sandy loam

Notes:

There was a recent wind storm and at first I thought this had been blown down, but when I tried to pick some up, it was firmly anchored

karen, that should be a lichen from the cladonia fam. Here also know as "Reindeer lichen /rendiermos" ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cladina_rangiferina ). take a look for local cladonia species. good luck.
