Description:
A small woodpecker with all-white belly, black and white spotted wings, a black line running through its eyes, a short black bill, a white stripe running down its back, and a red mark on nape of neck.Several small black spots along side of the outer white tail.
The female does not have red on the back of the head.
They have a long barbed , used to pull insects out of tiny places.
Habitat:
Found throughout the United States. You will find Downy Woodpeckers in open woodlands, particularly among deciduous trees, and brushy or weedy edges. They're also at home in orchards, city parks, backyards, and vacant lots. The Woodpeckers above come to my back deck to eat. they are somewhat friendly, and don't easily scare away.
Notes:
Some juveniles can have a red mark near forehead. they nest in old cavities in trees. they have one brood per year, 3-5 white eggs.
I really enjoy watching them.
