Field Notes

Notes:

I found another cicada struggling to complete its final nymphal moult — see my previous spotting (http://www.projectnoah.org/spottings/8700765) — but this one was still alive when I found it on the ground on my walk to work. I placed it on a tree branch, where it stayed until I found it again on my walk back home. Thinking it had died I brought it home with me to photograph, but since then it was shown signs of life. It isn't locomotive anymore, but just slowly kneads its foreclaws in the air. Poor thing....!

Nice series! It is a shame it didn't make it - I guess it must be a tricky & exhausting thing to extricate yourself like that!
Thanks Leuba. :) Snipping away its exoskeleton would be quite a delicate procedure, and I'd hate to make things worse. I was hoping it would have another try at some point during the night — that seems to be when they normally emerge. Otherwise I think I'll let nature take its course. :\
If it's still alive ? would it help if you snipped away some of the moutling exoskeleton ?! :) These are good clear photos..
