Field Notes

Description:

Nymphalidae; Nymphalinae; Nymphaliini; Hypolimnas anomala anomala Wallace,1869. This rather spiny caterpillar is a late instar larva of the Malayan Eggfly (butterfly). It is very beautiful, as you can see, but its prickly spines can cause a painful irritation. The presence of this butterfly (the Malayan Eggfly), in the Philippines, is confirmed by Wikipedia and Philippine Lepidoptera.

Habitat:

This beautiful caterpillar was spotted on unidentified foliage, along the roadside, during a bug hunt, in the local surrounding hills.

Notes:

There are two pictures of a larva of this species (but an earlier instar) in https://www.butterflycircle.com/checklist/index.php?/showbutterfly/101..... A larva of the same instar, as the one in my photo, can be seen in https://www.inaturalist.org/observations/145653972.....
