Description:

Jack Pine Cones range from 2.5-7.5 cm long. They grow in pairs and are green turning grey with age. They are often fused to the tree branch. The cones can remain on a tree for up to 25 years sealed in resin until fire or temperature above 47 degrees celsius open them.

Habitat:

Southern edge of Canadian Shield to Northern Boreal Forest. They prefer dry, sandy soil or rocky sites.

Thanks for pointing me in the right direction Gordon! I looked up Jack Pine in "Up North" by Doug Bennet & Tim Tiner...the description of the pine cones is pretty accurate to my photo.

This looks like jack pine (Pinus banksiana). Looks like 2 needles per clump and the cones look right as well. See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jack_Pine and see what you think.
