Field Notes

Description:

Standing about one metre tall, the great blue heron is the largest heron in North America. This bird has greyish-blue feathers on its body, a white head with a black stripe on each side, and a long neck and legs. It has a thin, extended, yellow-orange beak and displays brighter feathers during mating season.

Habitat:

This bird was found off a fishing dock hunting fish. The habitat consists of fresh open water. There are many fish in the water, in this location. There is also a shoreline of rock and grass surrounding the bird.

Notes:

I see these birds all the time along the Lake Erie rivers.
