Field Notes

Description:

Fast growing medium-sized evergreen tree related to Cherries, Plums, and Peaches. Mildly fragrant flowers appear in early spring. Produces vast amounts of inedible "cherries" in the Spring. Considered by some to be a nuisance or weedy tree, because seeds readily sprout and form dense stands very quickly.

Habitat:

Native to Southeastern United States. Generally grows wherever seeds are dispersed. Highly adaptable and tolerant plant.

Notes:

Leaves and branches contain a cyanide compound which is toxic if ingested, or if smoke from burning debris is inhaled.
