Field Notes

Notes:

This moth, about 3cm long, was outside our house. The red thing on its back looks like a horrible gaping wound, but it's a bald spot. According to martinl it is probably due to the moth bumping its fur/scales off while flying into streetlights and windows. (Thanks for the ID, martinl!)

I am learning that is definitely the case with insects... I'm only a beginner, there is SO MUCH to learn!
Shanna; a photograph like a spotting is a moment in time. The creature lives in and grows through life stages, sometimes very different from the stage you see. A mayfly lives less than a day as an adult but as a nymph, it maintains an underwater life for the rest of the year.
Your knowledge is amazing, Martin, thanks heaps. I never would have identified it, everything I was looking for involved bald spots!
Shanna I think you are accustomed to seeing their 'bald patch' I think these types of noctuidae moths fly repeatedly into the lights of houses and streetlights and their thoracic hairs and scales get bumped off. This is not so of freshly emerges moths as you can see by the linked image.
Thanks Martin, but what's the go with the bald spot, do you know?
