Field Notes

Description:

Pieridae; Coliadinae; Eurema hecabe hecabe Linnaeus 1758. In the first picture, the butterfly could perhaps be thought to resting (as it is indeed on the other three photos). A closer inspection will show that, in the first photo, this Common Grass Yellow is still in the process of inflating its wings which obviously means that it pupated and eclosed on this plant. That, in turn, means that the plant is probably a host plant for the species.

Habitat:

This Common Grass Yellow was spotted on a pot plant in our front yard. The plant is some variety of Snake Plant (Asparagaceae sp.). I hope to identify the plant further, because it might be significant in the lifestyle of this butterfly.
