Description:

This beautiful Dark-Marbled Carpet Moth was on my patio fence post. It was approximately 1 in wide.

Habitat:

Urban house patio fence post.

also look at "Satin Lutestring " pictures . These are found on birches. Either ,or. Good Luck!

Could possibly be a tussock moth of some kind.

@Emma--it is on a white patio fence post. No trees nearby. I sent the photo to Butterflies and Moths of North America for an ID, but sometime they take a while. Might send it to bugguide,net.
What kind of trees do you have around you? Maybe that could give you a clue. Colors and design are pretty. Must be hard to see on the fence.
@Emma--1 inch at the bottom of the wings. It has been hanging out on the fence post for 3 days now.
curious to know it's name. ! inch is fairly large.
