Field Notes

Description:

A fairly large (1") house spider with reddish legs. The abdomen of this one was unusually large.

Habitat:

Lives in cracks in the house.

Notes:

This is a native species to the area. It wanders around this time of year, showing up in bathtubs and sinks and on walls and ceilings where it sits in plain sight, sometimes for days.

This lovely is most likely a female! That would account for her size. Beautiful!
@ BugEric, any idea why they sit in the open? Are they so nasty that nothing will eat them? (quite possibly so--though I may have seen a cat swallow one down--did it wriggle inside her?) They're easily the most obvious of our spiders. Can't say as I've ever been bit by one--have you?
