Great spotting! Definitely a juvenile eastern box turtle - I'm glad you guys zeroed in on the ID of this cute little turtle.
Goody, I think you are right. I finally found some hatchling photos of an Eastern Box turtle that look like the one I found.
I still say eastern box turtle and a turtle fanatic friend of mine looked over the photos and location and thinks the same.
Dianne, I believe you're absolutely correct about the diamondback ID. But I'm more inclined to go with the northern diamondback (based on how dark the hatchlng is). The species in Florida are protected and cannot be sold--not sure about Ga.
Hmm, everything I am reading and images I am seeing are pointing to this being a Diamondback hatchling. Almost looks like an Ornate Diamondback. However, Diamondback habitat is brackish water on the coast. I found this little guy in Suwanee, which is roughly 250 miles from the shore. I can't help but wonder if he was a pet store dump :-( http://bobpalmatier.com/SevenSubspecies.shtml
Looks like a Malaclemys terrapin Diamondback Terrapin
Oh, well done. He's adorable!!!!!
