Hi Dianne, I agree. There are so many species that look similar! Sometimes it takes an invasive examination to distinguish between species. Luckily, this one doesn't! I think their hairy faces are cute!

Wow, thanks. I love trying to identify, but it can be so hard with just the one photo. I missed the fact that the L. thoracica is only found in the north. The L. grossa looks to be the closest as the tail in all the photos looks more yellow like the one I photographed. So, until someone else points out a better match, L. grossa it is! :-)

Hi Diane, I gave you two ID's for your Robber Fly. L. thoracica that you had is found in the northern states. The two I provided are in your area. It's difficult to tell in the photo but I believe the abdomen is primarily yellow in which case it would be L. grossa. If you believe it's black with a yellow stripe towards the end, it's L. divisor.
