Field Notes

Description:

Small white heron, originally from Africa, but has spread all over the tropical regions of the world. During the breeding season, this bird sports some orange feathers on the head and the breast.

Habitat:

In meadows, prairies and savannas or wherever there are cattle or other big ungulates.

Notes:

Feeds on insects ans external parasites such as ticks and horseflies.

Interesting! I did not know that, but I saw them often in the wild in French Guiana when I lived there. They are very common there, too.
It's not just spread to the tropics. I've commonly see cattle egrets in the US state of Missouri :-)
