Field Notes

Description:

The common baron (Euthalia aconthea) - often called simply "baron" - is a medium-sized nymphalid butterfly native to India and Southeast Asia. There is a wide variability in the species (as demonstrated by the third reference link) which I think encompasses those of this specimen. The species is introduced to Papua.

Habitat:

Attracted to fallen ripe guavas in a large semi-urban yard and garden adjacent to a disturbed patch of remnant forest. This is in the equatorial tropics of northern New Guinea.

Notes:

According to http://www.papua-insects.nl/insect%20orders/Lepidoptera/Nymphalidae/Nym… there are just two species of this genus (Euthalia aeropa, E. aetion) recorded as naturally occurring in Papua, not counting the invasive common baron (E. aconthea).
