Description:

Looks like it could be either a plant or mushroom. Red, stiff conical folding growth pattern that looks like a pair of horns sticking out of the ground.

Habitat:

Was found in a fresh water wetland type area growing in decaying piles of debris

You're right - my first guess is some sort of mushroom... not your average cup mushroom though. Beyond that... :D
