Donkey
Equus africanus asinus
28.8504, 34.162
Field Notes
Description:
Domesticated donkeys in Sinai are usually this dark brown; donkeys in mainland Egypt have a wider color range
Habitat:
Spotted, along with about 7 other donkeys, with their Bedouin owners at a well in a desert wadi. The donkeys grazed as the women were filling their jerkins with fresh water. The donkeys would be loaded with these to carry back to the local encampment or village.
Notes:
The donkey has been used as a working animal for at least 5000 years. There are more than 40 million donkeys in the world, mostly in under-developed countries, where they are used principally as draught or pack animals. Working donkeys are often associated with those living at or below subsistence levels. Asses were first domesticated around 3000 BC, or 4000 BC, probably in Egypt or Mesopotamia. (wiki)
