Field Notes

Description:

Black and light yellow bee that keeps its abdomen curled under. The thorax is brown and fuzzy and the eyes are green. The flight is somewhat comical and my daughter even commented that it flies funny. It is very fast zooming around but when near a flower, it wobbles back and fourth.

Habitat:

Perez's Sea Lavender in the backyard

Notes:

"The bee genus Anthophora is one of the largest in the family Apidae, with over 450 species worldwide in 14 different subgenera. It make nests in the soil, either in banks or in flat ground; the larvae develop in cells with waterproof linings and do not spin cocoons. Males commonly have pale white or yellow facial markings, and/or peculiarly modified leg armature and hairs." - Wikipedia
