Buck Moth
Hemileuca maia
34.7936, -92.5295
Field Notes
Description:
Medium sized moth, 5-6 cm long. Forewing a black with white stripe. Conspicuous red hair at posterior tip of abdomen (rest of abdomen is black).
Habitat:
Oak forests, found on white oak.
Notes:
Very interesting threat display. As I was going to reach for the moth, it tensed its wings back to appear like a hymenopteran, arched it's abdomen towards me and ejected a milky orange fluid. No smell, did not touch
