The largest was about 4-5 inches tall from base to top. There were also small white nodules at the base that looked like new ones trying to come up. We get all sorts of weird looking fungi in our yard. These were in an open area of the yard between a holly bush and a maple.

It looks a lot like Macrolepiota rachodes(shaggy parasol), and yet somewhat different. Check spore print. And were the young button knobs a medium to dark brown? Mine rarely start scaling, or becoming shaggy until they've opened a bit more.. How big are they?
Looks like Shaggy Mane, but I've never seen them so spherical.
