Field Notes

Description:

This beautiful dove was sunbathing in the floor.
On its upper surfaces, the Luzon bleeding-heart is slate grey in colour, but because it is iridescent, it can appear to be purple, royal blue, or bottle-green, and the apparent colour varies with lighting conditions.

Habitat:

Native from Philippines.
Specimen living in Pairi Daiza, Belgium.

Thank you Ashley! It indeed looks like the right ID although the bird did not let me see her bleeding heart from her position on the floor. @Ava: thanks for trying. The spottings I am showing from Aug 31 were made in a zoo called Pairi Daiza. They contain species from different places in the world :-) The birds are free in large aviaries recreating the conditions of origin and because of their relatively free state it was at times difficult for me to find the associated sign naming the species. Luckily I can show them here in PN for people to help me set the right ID :-) Thanks to Caleb, James and the others too! ;-)
i think this is a male, but not entirely sure. Did you happen to see the red "heart" on it's chest? the size of it could help confirm.
You're getting a bit different look at the bird since it is bathing in the dirt and has its wings all spread out. You wouldn't normally see the orange on the sides when it is just walking around.
Marta, This is a mystery! I can't find it in my Birds of Europe book, or by searching Google images for "dove species." Maybe it's a breeder's cross gone feral?
