Field Notes

Description:

Long-stemmed leaves rustle in the slightest breeze. The most widely distributed tree in North America. The Aspen trees are the only ones with leaves still on them. This is one of the widest and tallest Aspen on our property. I am unable to put my arms around it. Most of them do not last long and the tops seem to fall off early in their lives. This is a healthy one. Mom tree's bark is greenish white, often roughened by horizontal bands. Last image is a young one, the bark is thin and smooth - dark gray.
