Field Notes

Notes:

I found this butterfly on the roadside. It is in beautiful condition except for a partially malformed wing (it can't really fly) which makes me think it is newly hatched with a wing defeat from metamorphosis. It rode home with me perched on my t-shirt, and is now resting on my tomatoes. I gave it some peach (I remember seeing them feeding from fruit fallen from a tree) which it tried a little of.

Kerry please consider adding this wonderful spotting to NZ moths and butterflies mission http://www.projectnoah.org/missions/17141464
They are stunning — Admirals are my favourite. :) This one disappeared from the tomato plant maybe a little over a day after these pictures were taken. I was hoping the wing might come right, but it seemed pretty damaged. :(
Absolutely stunning. Did it survive?
