Field Notes

Description:

Erebidae; Arctiinae; Arctiini; Utetheisa pulchelloides Hampson, 1907. The caterpillars shown here are the larvae of the Heliotrope Moth (U
tetheisa pulcheloides). In May and June, every year, the rice field, behind our house (which has not yet been ploughed for the coming rice-planting season) and much of our backyard are almost completely taken over by Indian Heliotrope. This is an important Host Plant for Utetheisa pulcheloides and the larvae appear in great numbers.

Habitat:

These Utetheisa pulcheloides larvae were spotted, in our backyard, on Indian heliotrope (Heliotropium indicum Linn.), known in the Philippines as Trompang elepante (Elephant's Trunk) or Ikoi-pusa (Cat's Tail). Plant information from http://www.stuartxchange.org/TrompangEle..............
