Description:
Tree, ca 6 feet tall.
Flowers usually in pair; white. Calyces ca 4mm long with minute lobes. This species is distinguished by the fact that the anthers just within the mouth of corolla tube, with the style extending just slightly beyond the mouth of the corolla tube. Petals sometimes ‘flared.’
Habitat:
Growing on east-facing slope in deciduous woods above a lake.
Notes:
This species is distinguished from the Little Silverbells (Halesia carolina) by the fact that the style extends just slightly beyond the petals. In contrast, in Halesia Carolina, 1/3 to ½ of the length of the style extends beyond the mouth of the corolla tube.
